NAFOCO site visit kick-starts the collaboration between Enterprise and DE3

On March 21, the DE3 team visited the Nam Dinh Forest Products Joint Stock Company (NAFOCO) to implement energy efficiency measurement.
This activity is part of DEPP's Component 3, which aims to develop incentive schemes for energy efficiency in the industrial sector, enhance capacity to develop and revise the energy efficiency regulatory framework at the national level, and enforce compliance with energy efficiency legal framework at the provincial level.
The working session included DE3 experts and NAFOCO representatives.
The DE3 team included representative from the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) Henrik Nielsen and Rahul Raju Dusa. Consultant representatives included Danish Energy Expert Peter Maagoe Petersen, Bui Chi Cong and Ngo Tuan Kieu form Vietnam Energy Technology Solution Company (VETS). Representing  NAFACO were Chairman of the Board and General Director Bui Duc Chuyen, Deputy General Director Le Van Tuan, and representatives from various departments.
Mr Bui Duc Chuyen provided an overview of the enterprise. Established in 1991, NAFACO specializes in wood manufacturing. Since 2007, the enterprise has collaborated with IKEA to manufacture wooden products, making it the first and only company in the province to export wooden products to international markets.
The DE3 team toured the wood drying area during their visit.
In recent years, NAFOCO has implemented various energy efficiency measures to ensure sustainable development and meet EU Standards. In 2022, the enterprise consumed over 15 million kilowatts of electricity, which 5.5 million kilowatts used for drying ovens (boilers, fans), accounting for 35% of the total consumption.
Despite these efforts, the enterprise's energy efficiency measures have not fully met their requirements, especially as their need for forest product drying is rapidly increasing. Accordingly, the drying technology and production methods currently in use are not synchronized.
The site visit by the DE3 team plays a crucial role in assisting the enterprise in implementing future energy efficiency measures.
According to DEA expert Henrik Nielsen, NAFOCO has initially applied measures to improve energy efficiency. Notably, the enterprise uses waste products like sawdust for furnaces instead of coal and oil. However, the results are still modest due to the insufficient old boiler. If NAFOCO applies new technologies and renovates the boiler to be more efficient, they can use fewer waste products.
The DEPP experts exchanged ideas with NAFOCO representatives.
Local expert agreed with Mr. Nielsen, stating that the site visit would help NAFOCO calculate the techniques deployed and optimal investment cost, bringing high efficiency and sustainable results for the enterprise.
For example, a new boiler capable of using all exhaust gases and circulating production could limit heat loss. Another measure could be to reinstall the steam pipe to determine evaporating water remaining in the pipeline, optimize the provided heat, and reduce drying time.
After the site visit, DE3 team will continue to evaluate and conduct a pre-feasibility study to find the most appropriate energy optimization plan for the enterprise.
